South African NGOs who have played an instrumental role in rebuilding peace and social cohesion
following the July 2021 civil unrest report that dialogue circles play an important role in preventing
future unrest and violence. The most recent crime statistics released by SAPS also reveal a
concerning picture with 6200 murders reported and 15 000 women assaulted between January to
March 2023.

Today, the 14th July 2023, I reconnected with Magadien Wentzel in Cape Town.

It is almost 20 years since our first encounter. Below follows a narrative of my journey with him shortly after his release.

South Africa continues to grapple with a myriad of challenges including high unemployment, crime, poverty, and inequality which remain on an upward trajectory. Consequently, marginalised communities throughout the country endure the negative effect of these challenges, and therefore, interventions to lessen the impact of these socioeconomic challenges have become critical.

Despite a global shift toward a more humanitarian and democratic society, with new child protection legislation and family policies, the majority of South Africans experience serious problems in their families, especially concerning the lack of parental responsibility and the presentation of problematic child behaviour.

One of Johannesburg’s largest rivers, the Jukskei River, needs an urgent intervention to address the continual pollution that threatens it, and to make it safe and sustainable for over 700,000 dwellers in Alexandra and other surrounding communities.

Over the past five years Khulisa has forged a powerful partnership with ForGood, a company that connects people who want to make a difference to causes that need help.
