MEDIA RELEASE
Khulisa Western Cape
Dialogue Circles Foster Healing, Accountability, and Change.
Cape Town, October 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Over the past three months, Khulisa Social Solutions Western Cape has facilitated a series of Dialogue Circles across communities from Mitchell’s Plain to Somerset West, Strand, Fezeka, and the Cape Town CBD — creating safe spaces where individuals, families, and youth confront the root causes of trauma, violence, and social disconnection.
Between June and August 2025, 22 Dialogue Circles involved over 90 participants, including adults in rehabilitation and diversion programmes, first-time offenders, and school learners aged 10–17. Led by Khulisa facilitators trained in restorative justice and mediation, these sessions addressed issues such as substance abuse, theft, gender-based violence (GBV), and responsible citizenship.
“I want to rebuild my relationship with my family and teach others not to make the same mistakes.”
“Unemployment and substance abuse are breaking families and fuelling GBV.”
“I’ve learned that stealing destroys your future. I must accept what I don’t have.”
These voices reveal emotional honesty and dedication to personal change that define the Dialogue Circle approach — a process allowing communities to explore lived experiences, recognise patterns of harm, and create pathways towards restoration and resilience.
Emerging Themes and Insights
Khulisa’s facilitators identified a number of recurring themes across the sessions:
- Root causes: unemployment, trauma, peer pressure, and unstable homes.
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): neglect, domestic violence, parental absence, and early exposure to crime or substance use.
- Consequences: family breakdown, stigma, and loss of trust or employment.
- Protective factors: access to counselling, mentorship, peer support, and skills development.
The Dialogue Circles revealed a shared desire among participants to take responsibility for their choices, rebuild family connections, and actively contribute to safer, more cohesive communities.
Building Resilience Through Dialogue
By combining trauma-informed facilitation with community-led insight, Khulisa’s Dialogue Circles are transforming how individuals and families interact. Participants reported increased emotional awareness, empathy, and motivation for change. The process also strengthens protective systems — such as mentorship and community peer networks — that lower the risk of relapse into harmful behaviour.
“The courage shown by participants to speak their truth and listen to others without judgment is what makes these circles so powerful,” says Evermore Mokoena, Khulisa’s Western Cape Lead. “Healing happens when people are heard and supported in taking accountability for their lives.”
A Call to Collaboration
Khulisa’s Dialogue Circles form part of a broader provincial effort to promote restorative justice and social cohesion. Partnerships with the Department of Social Development (DSD), NGOs, and community-based organisations have been critical in extending the reach and sustainability of this work.
Khulisa invites government departments, corporates, and funders to collaborate in expanding Dialogue Circles across the province — ensuring that every community has access to spaces of empathy, learning, and change.
