MEDIA RELEASE

KHULISA SOCIAL SOLUTIONS TO UNVEIL CREATIVE HEALING AND SOCIAL COHESION OUTCOMES

AT BLOUBERG VOICES OF UNITY CELEBRATION

Limpopo – 13 October 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Khulisa Social Solutions will present groundbreaking findings from its Empowerability Programme and creative healing interventions at the upcoming “Blouberg Voices of Unity: Community Impact Celebration and CIM Launch” to be held at the Taaibosch Tribal Offices on Thursday, 23 October 2025 (09:00–11:30).

The event marks the culmination of six months of intensive community engagement, research, and innovation in Blouberg — one of Limpopo’s most socially complex areas. It will feature baseline data presentations, AI-enabled impact analysis, and first-hand community case studies illustrating early signs of transformation.

In recent months, Khulisa has implemented a series of Arts and Drama Therapy workshops curated and led by Arts Therapist, Kathryn Magee, as part of the EmpowerAbility Programme. The initiative trained NGO practitioners, educators, and social workers to use creative self-expression as a tool for trauma recovery and emotional wellbeing.

“This programme empowers individuals and communities to express what cannot always be communicated through words,” said Kath. “Through the arts and, more specifically, through play, people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities can rediscover confidence, joy, and the ability to connect with one another meaningfully.”

These workshops followed extensive surveys conducted by Khulisa across the Blouberg region, gathering the voices of teachers, learners, and community members. The data revealed that while poverty, unemployment, and trauma continue to challenge daily life, creativity and self-expression have emerged as powerful drivers of social healing and cohesion.

Khulisa’s art-based methodology is complemented by AI-driven emotional analysis tools that assess changes in expression and engagement, offering real-time insight into community wellbeing. This hybrid human-technology approach will be showcased at the Voices of Unity event through live demonstrations and data visualisations.

“What began as an experiment in creative recovery has evolved into a model for social cohesion,” said Lesley Ann van Selm, Managing Director of Khulisa Social Solutions. “Blouberg is showing South Africa that when communities are given tools to express, heal, and lead together, systemic change becomes possible.”

The Voices of Unity Celebration will also launch Khulisa’s Collaborative Implementation Model (CIM), a framework designed to align communities, NGOs, corporates, and government in building cohesive, resilient, and self-sustaining systems of care.

About the Blouberg Voices of Unity Event

Hosted in partnership with local NGOs and community structures, the event will include presentations of baseline data and AI-driven analytics, demonstrations of dialogue circles, trauma interventions, and creative art-based healing initiatives. Participants will share stories from children, youth, elders, and persons with disabilities — celebrating unity through creativity and collective learning.

CASE STUDY: ART AS A BRIDGE TO BELONGING – THE BLOUBERG STORY

When 16 teachers, social workers, and NGO volunteers gathered for Khulisa’s Arts and Drama Therapy workshop in Blouberg, most arrived burdened by fatigue and frustration. “We care for others every day, but no one cares for us,” one participant said quietly as she picked up a crayon.   Two hours later, the room had transformed. Laughter filled the air as participants painted scenes of their hopes and shared personal stories through improvised drama and song. “It’s the first time I’ve felt seen in years,” another added.

For these community leaders, the Arts and Drama Therapy workshop was more than training — it was a release. Years of serving others without being heard had hardened their emotional lives. Through play, they rediscovered their voice.  Across the room, laughter echoed as participants acted out short plays about the daily struggles of parenting and teaching. The exercise ended not in tears but in applause.

Khulisa’s approach to creative healing is simple yet profound: it allows communities to process trauma safely, rebuild empathy, and reconnect with one another. In Blouberg, participants are now applying these methods in schools, clinics, and ECD centres — using the arts and play to comfort children, calm anxiety, and strengthen relationships.

The Blouberg case demonstrates that creative self-expression is not a luxury but a necessity for rebuilding emotional resilience and trust. It bridges divides across age, gender, and culture — restoring what hardship has taken away: a sense of community and belonging.

“We didn’t need funding for walls or equipment,” said one teacher. “We just needed space — and permission — to feel again.”
