MEDIA RELEASE
WESTERN CAPE TAKES A MAJOR STEP FORWARD IN MEDIATION, TRAINING DELIVERS 100% SATISFACTION AND IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Cape Town, 8 December 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Something powerful happened in Wynberg last week. Over three days, from 3–5 December, a diverse group of government officials, social workers, community practitioners, and NGO partners came together for a Conflict Resolution and Mediation Training Programme run by Khulisa Social Solutions, the Society of Mediators (UK), and the Department of Social Development (DSD).
And the result was remarkable:
Every single participant said the training met their expectations, and all agreed the content was directly relevant to real conflicts they face every day.
A Training Experience That Landed Deeply
Participants were especially moved by the practical elements—100% selected role plays as the most valuable part of the programme. The facilitation earned outstanding ratings across the board, averaging 4.7 for clarity, safe spaces, and responsiveness.
Participants also expressed strong confidence in their new skills:
- Managing conflict (4.8)
- Active listening (4.7)
- Reframing and calming people (4.6)
- Running safe circles (4.6)
Nearly 80% said they expect to conduct their first mediation within the next month.
How This Training Addresses the Causal Factors of Conflict
One of the most significant contributions of this programme is that it tackles the root causes of conflict head-on. Participants worked through how unresolved trauma, chronic stress, harmful norms, power imbalances, frustration with service delivery, and communication breakdowns drive conflict in families, communities, workplaces, and government institutions.
Rather than reacting only once situations have escalated, the training equips practitioners to intervene early, with the tools to stabilise emotions, rebuild trust, and shift conversations from blame to problem-solving. Skills such as active listening, reframing, conflict mapping, restorative justice techniques, and structured dialogue circles help practitioners uncover what is actually happening beneath the surface—often long before a dispute becomes harmful.
By strengthening the human and relational foundations of service delivery, this work directly supports:
- reduced pressure on SAPS and courts
- earlier identification of brewing tensions
- stronger collaboration between departments
- safer communities with real pathways to resolution
This preventative, trauma-aware approach is exactly what is needed to address the deep drivers of conflict and GBV across the province.
A Brief Look at the Training Itself
The three-day programme blended neuroscience, restorative practices, trauma-informed facilitation, mediation demonstrations, community case scenarios, and role plays. It was designed to be highly practical so delegates could immediately apply the tools in their own environments.
This blend of global expertise and local reality made the training both emotionally resonant and technically rigorous, giving participants the confidence to handle the complex, emotionally-loaded conflicts that are now part of their daily work.
Training Rooted in Real South African Challenges
Khulisa ensured the curriculum spoke directly to issues faced in Western Cape communities: trauma, inequality, rising community tensions, GBV dynamics, institutional mistrust, and overwhelmed service structures. Many participants expressed that it was the first time they understood the deeper patterns behind the conflicts they handle daily.
A Long-Term Journey
This training marks Phase 1 of a multi-year partnership (2025–2027) that includes mentorship, top-up training, advanced modules, and pathways to international accreditation. The Western Cape is now positioned to become a leader in scalable mediation and social-cohesion work.
A Moment of Commitment
The programme ended with a deeply meaningful Commitment Circle, where participants pledged to embed mediation into their daily work and departmental cultures. Certificates were awarded, symbolising not the end, but the beginning of a new movement.
A Final Word
“Life unfolds in the now — hesitation is the enemy of change. Grasp today with both hands, for tomorrow is a privilege, not a promise.”
