Mandela Day is a call to action for companies, individuals, and organisations alike to make a positive impact in communities that need it the most. In a time when millions of children worry about their next meal, social and political instability threatens the fabric of society, and poverty stifles the potential of countless citizens, we must embrace Madiba’s spirit to create the change our country desperately needs.
A small donation can have a profound impact! By providing a child with a warm daily meal, you give them the energy to focus on their education, improving their academic performance and unlocking a brighter future filled with opportunities.
With Madiba’s vision for equality, Mandela Day has a strong focus on social justice issues. At Khulisa Social Solutions, our core mission is to foster social cohesion in our country, and we can only do this with your help!
Contributing to the vision of both Madiba and Khulisa to create a more equitable society, here are four ways in which you can give back to us leading up to Mandela Day:
Sponsor a dialogue circle for children exposed to GBV & bullying
Gender-based violence (GBV) continues to plague the community of Alexandra, with many children witnessing and experiencing GBV and bullying both at home and in school. These traumatic experiences leave deep emotional scars, affecting their overall well-being, academic performance, and social development. The need for safe spaces where children can express their feelings, receive support, and learn healthy coping strategies has never been more urgent.
At our community centre, we provide dialogue circles and support groups specifically designed to create these vital safe spaces. Here, children can openly share their experiences and receive the guidance and support they need. Through these interactions, they develop healthy coping mechanisms that help them navigate their trauma, fostering resilience and hope for a brighter future.
Sponsor a dialogue circle for R5.000 for 15 participants.
Sponsor a child to attend a civic education programme
Many children in our community lack the opportunity to learn about civic responsibility and the importance of contributing to their community. Without this education, they miss the chance to develop into compassionate, active citizens who can make a positive impact.
Our civic education programme at our community centre fills this gap by teaching children the value of community service and how they can contribute in meaningful ways. Whether it’s assisting the elderly, working in community gardens, helping mothers without caregivers, or participating in community clean-ups, our programme empowers children to make a difference.
Tailored for school students, the programme offers age-appropriate lessons, hands-on activities, and a short course on community development. Children gain practical skills and a deep understanding of their role in building a stronger, more connected community.
To sponsor a child for our 2-day civic education programme, it costs R2000. This includes training sessions, material, transport and daily meals. Total number of children needed to make up a group is 15.
Sponsor a learner to attend a career guidance workshop
Many Grade 8 learners from under-resourced school in Gauteng lack access to comprehensive career guidance, limiting their understanding of potential career paths and the skills needed to pursue them. Without this essential guidance, students struggle to make informed decisions about their future.
Our career guidance workshops, held at our community centre during the school holidays, bridges this gap. These workshops provide Grade 8 learners with valuable insights into various career paths, the necessary skills and education required, and practical advice on how to pursue their interests and goals. By equipping students with this knowledge, we empower them to make informed decisions that pave the way for a successful career, while breaking the cycle of poverty.
To sponsor a learner to attend a career guidance workshop will cost R1000. This includes the workshop session, material, transport and a meal. Career guidance sessions run for 2 days and accommodates 15 children.
Donate unused clothing items to support NGO business
Khulisa is currently running a donation drive, urging everyone to donate unused clothing. These items will be redirected to our partner NGOs, who can sell them to generate much-needed income. This additional revenue stream significantly enhances their ability to sustain and potentially expand their vital services. Your contribution can make a profound difference in empowering these organisations to continue their impactful work.
Items can be dropped off at our offices at 105 Oxford Road Saxonwold Johannesburg.
