BREAKING BARRIERS:
KHULISA SOCIAL SOLUTIONS HOSTS MENTAL WELLNESS DIALOGUE CIRCLE IN ALEXANDRA TO COMBAT STIGMA AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY SUPPORT
10 March 2025 – Alexandra, South Africa
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
10 March 2025 – Alexandra, South Africa: Khulisa Social Solutions, a leader in social cohesion and NGO capacity-building, hosted a groundbreaking Mental Wellness Dialogue Circle in Alexandra. The circle provided a safe and open platform for community members to discuss mental health challenges, stigma, and the barriers to psychosocial support.
As part of Khulisa’s NGO Wellness Strategy, this initiative empowers local organisations, workplaces, and individuals by normalising conversations around mental well-being.
The session revealed pressing concerns such as burnout, workplace toxicity, family stress, and cultural misconceptions surrounding mental illness, highlighting the urgent need for accessible and culturally relevant mental health support in marginalized communities.

Key Insights from the Dialogue Circle
Through an interactive approach, participants selected words from a mental health word cloud, sparking deep discussions on emotional exhaustion, family responsibilities, and the psychological toll of verbally abusive management. Many participants expressed frustration at the lack of employer support for mental wellness, reinforcing the need for trauma-informed workplace interventions.
A primary concern raised was the stigma around mental health in Black communities, particularly in townships where mental health services remain scarce and underutilised. Participants shared that mental wellness is often deprioritised due to financial constraints and the absence of accessible, culturally relevant mental health education.
Another critical issue discussed was the overlap between mental illness and spiritual beliefs.
Many individuals in Alexandra struggle to differentiate between conditions such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis and what is often perceived as an ancestral calling or spiritual awakening. This misinterpretation leads to delayed or inappropriate interventions, reinforcing the need for education that bridges the gap between traditional beliefs and mental health awareness.
Khulisa’s Commitment to Mental Wellness
Recognising the urgency of these issues, Khulisa is expanding its NGO Capacity-Building Unit to incorporate mental wellness services, ensuring that community-based organizations and workplaces have the necessary resources to provide psychosocial support. Future initiatives include:
- Workshops on workplace stress management and trauma-informed care
- Partnerships with local mental health professionals for accessible counselling referrals
- Ongoing dialogue circles addressing the intersection of mental health, spirituality, and cultural beliefs
- Collaboration with employers and community leaders to advocate for workplace wellness policies
“Mental wellness should not be a privilege but a right,” said Primrose Tshinavha, a mental health expert who led the session.
“Through community-driven initiatives such as these dialogue circles, we can begin
to change perceptions and ensure that individuals receive the support they require.”
