KHULISA SOCIAL SOLUTIONS AND WEDELA NGOs UNVEIL GROUND-BREAKING RESEARCH TO ADDRESS COMMUNITY CHALLENGES
Wedela, South Africa – 10 February 2024
Khulisa Social Solutions, in partnership with local NGOs, has completed an extensive community research initiative to assess the needs, challenges, and opportunities for sustainable development in Wedela. The research, conducted between November 2024 and January 2025, engaged 500 residents through dialogue circles and surveys. It revealed critical socio-economic and safety concerns while identifying key areas for intervention.
The findings of this research will be formally presented to key stakeholders—including community members, government representatives, local businesses, and the mining sector—at a special community event on 11 February at Wedela Community Hall. This event will serve as a platform to discuss collaborative solutions and outline a path forward for sustainable community development.
KEY FINDINGS
- Economic Hardships: More than 57% of households earn less than R3,000 a month, facing
limited job opportunities. - Education and Skills Gap: 80% of young people are not participating in education or
vocational training due to financial constraints and a lack of information. - Safety and Security Concerns: High crime rates, school violence, and a weak law
enforcement presence threaten community stability. - NGO Needs: Many local NGOs lack adequate governance structures, effective fundraising
strategies, or collaboration with key stakeholders.
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE WEDELA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NETWORK
In response to the challenges identified, a coalition of local NGOs, community leaders, and social partners has been formed under the name ;Wedela Community Development Network. This coalition seeks to promote collaboration, resource sharing, and capacity building among stakeholders to address issues such as youth unemployment, GBV, crime, and social instability.
COMMUNITY DRIVEN-SOLUTIONS
Khulisa Social Solutions and its partners have developed an Action Plan to drive sustainable change by:
- Strengthening the capacity of NGOs through leadership training and compliance support.
- Expanding psychosocial and legal services for victims of gender-based violence, crime, and instability.
- Creating employment pathways through skills training, business hubs, and mentorship.
- Enhancing collaboration among NGOs, government, and the mining sector.
Promoting sports, arts, and cultural initiatives to engage youth and prevent crime. - Improving recreational facilities to foster community well-being and cohesion.
CONCLUSION

Now, we must come together to implement these solutions, ensuring that young people have access to sports, arts, and recreational facilities that support their development and well-being.
