EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION: KHULISA SOCIAL SOLUTIONS HIGHLIGHTS URGENT NEED FOR CIVIC EDUCATION AMONG YOUTH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 19 August 2024

Khulisa Social Solutions has released a compelling report revealing significant gaps in civic
knowledge and engagement among the youth in Carletonville, West Rand. The findings underscore
the urgent need for targeted civic education programs to empower young people as active,
informed citizens who can contribute to the social cohesion and sustainable development of their
communities.
During a recent school holiday program, Khulisa conducted a pre-assessment survey with 20 children
and adolescents aged 11 to 17. The results were concerning: 70% of participants were unaware of
their rights as citizens, and 90% had no understanding of what “diversity” means. Furthermore, 40%
had never participated in any form of community service or volunteer activity.
“These findings highlight a critical gap in the knowledge and understanding of civic responsibilities
among our youth,” said Lesley Ann van Selm, Managing Director of Khulisa Social Solutions.
“Without a solid foundation in civic education, young people are less equipped to engage in their
communities, advocate for their rights, and contribute to social cohesion.”
Civic education is the cornerstone of social cohesion, fostering mutual respect, trust, and
collaboration among community members. Educating the youth about their roles and
responsibilities as citizens not only prepares them to be active participants in their communities but
also strengthens the resilience of these communities, particularly in addressing issues like crime,
poverty, and social inequality.
Khulisa Social Solutions is committed to bridging this gap by implementing educational programs
that focus on:

  • Civic Education: Teaching youth about their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of
    active citizenship.
Community Engagement: Encouraging participation in community service to foster a sense
    of belonging and responsibility.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Educating young people about sustainability and their role in
    protecting the environment.
  • Cultural Awareness: Promoting understanding and appreciation of diversity to build inclusive
    communities.
  • Leadership and Advocacy: Empowering youth to take on leadership roles and advocate for
    community needs.

As we face a rapidly changing world, it is more important than ever to equip our young people with the knowledge and tools they need to be active, engaged citizens,” added van Selm. “Through targeted civic education, we can ensure that the next generation is ready to lead and to contribute to a more just, equitable, and cohesive society.
